Trilinear filtering solves this by doing a texture lookup and bilinear filtering on the two closest mipmap levels (one higher and one lower quality), and then linearly interpolating the results. Mipmapping also helps you to increase the cache efficiency in Minecraft. The first step is to get rid of the loop and say that the number of mipmap levels you can throw away = 0.
